The BMFA DART was originally called the Delta Dart. It was designed in America by Frank Ehling, for the British Model Flying Association sister organisation, the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA).
The DART has a number of novel design features which makes the building simple and the possibility of success almost guaranteed, in fact in America they have stated a 98% success rate.
The flying surfaces of the DART take the form of simple triangulated balsawood frames that are glued directly over the upturned plan. The plan is then cut out to form the covering for the flying surfaces. The flying surfaces have pointed tips and this means that any warps which may develop have a minimum effect on the flying qualities of the model.
All necessary flying angles, apart from the dihedral angle, have been pre-set in the kit, so reducing the risk of error by the student at the building stage.
The DART is of such a size and weight that it can be flown indoors in a normal school hall with little chance of it causing any damage, but it is large enough to be flown outdoors on a calm day on a normal size playing field. It is not recommended to fly the DART when the grass is wet or the air is damp.
